| (....) The strength of the Salon d'Automne does not lie in the presence of such and such a great master (in the present exhibition there are hardly as true masters as Bonnard and Waroquier) but in a large troop of painters conscientious, resigned to being only small masters, anonymously.
Gathered each year for a long time, they have made a habit of making the same honest contribution to each exhibition. Usually accustomed to canvases of modest dimensions and pretensions, they endeavor to deliver only works without reproach. This simplicity deserves a lot of esteem. Some artists push it to a certain perfection such as Charles Guérin, André Fraye, Girieud, Durey. (....) |
