For me, I will simply observe that the retrospectives, especially when they are as successful as that of Bresdin and Monticelli, instead of imposing the idea that we follow our tradition, suggest that we have a little lost sense, momentarily at least. It is astonishing to think that twenty years of painting separate Monticelli from Friesz and Henri-Matisse and Bresdin de Girieud, and no artifice of dialectic will make a well-constituted mind understand the relationship that can unite the (...) |
